The Second Law Is Undefeated
Every lever has an inverse and the second law is undefeated. AI is a massive lever, so its invoice is out there somewhere. The people who scare me are the ones convinced there isn't one.
Thermodynamics is the one law I’ve never watched anything beat. Not a market, not a technology, not a clever financial structure, not a founder who swears this time is different. Somewhere in every system there’s a ledger, and the ledger balances. You can move where the cost lands. You cannot delete it. That’s not an opinion about physics. It’s the closest thing we have to a rule that holds everywhere.
The useful version for everyday life is smaller. Every lever has an inverse. You pull hard on one end and something moves the other way, and if you can’t see what moved, that doesn’t mean nothing did. It means you haven’t found it yet. A shortcut that saves you time spends it somewhere downstream. A process that removes friction here adds it there, usually somewhere you’re not looking, usually later. The inverse is real whether or not it’s on your dashboard.
AI is a massive lever. Maybe the biggest one I’ll see in my working life. Which is exactly why I don’t believe the free energy story anyone’s selling about it. When someone tells me a technology is pure upside, all gain and no cost, I don’t hear good news. I hear that they haven’t found the invoice. It’s out there. It always is. Maybe it’s the skill that quietly stops getting practiced because the machine does it now. Maybe it’s a dependency you don’t notice until the thing goes down. Maybe it’s the judgment that atrophies when nobody has to do the reps anymore. I don’t know where the bill lands. I know one is coming, because the second law doesn’t take exceptions.
This is not doom. I want to be clear about that. The lever is worth pulling. Levers are how anything big gets done, and refusing to pull them because there’s a cost is its own kind of foolishness. The point isn’t to put the lever down. The point is to go looking for the inverse on purpose, early, while it’s cheap to see, instead of getting handed the invoice at a moment you didn’t pick.
The people who scare me aren’t the ones counting the cost. They’re the ones who’ve convinced themselves there isn’t one. Free energy is the oldest scam there is, and it comes back every generation wearing the newest coat. This generation’s coat is very impressive. Underneath it, the ledger still balances. It always balances. Find your invoice before it finds you.
